Think Safety Before Heading Out For Winter Recreation

DETROIT (WWJ) - Winter is far from over, and we still have some pretty cold weather to deal with, and the Coast Guard wants us to think safety before going out on the frozen lakes.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Gary Lundy has some suggestions that the Coast Guard wants us to be aware of ...

The Coast Guard says people need to use extra precautions when planning recreational activities on cold water as well as venturing out on the ice. Cold water can kill quickly. Air temperatures might be far above freezing, but its irrelevant when someone unexpectedly enters the water, and it only takes a few minutes for hypothermia to begin.

Going out on a frozen lake can be tricky as well, because ice thickness can vary from one lake to another. We've all heard the stories of how people have driven out on a frozen lake, only to have their three-ton SUV fall through the ice.

And if your vehicle does fall through the ice, you could be fined up to 11,000 dollars, and also get stuck with the salvage costs.

Check the forecast before going out on the ice. It could save your life.
