Council President Won't Run For Re-Election In 2013

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh says he won't seek another term on city council in 2013.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher spoke with Pugh who tells her that he never intended to run for more than one council term, but what about a run for mayor?

"I'll put it to you this way - I'm considering all of my options and that is one of them, I'm not going to be focused on that because we've got a tough job on our hands as a  council working with the mayor. But working closing with the mayor you see intimately the job of mayor," said Pugh.

"I guess I had never said before now, that I never intended to run for city council more than once anyway because the assumption is when you go to city council you go there and you stay fora long time, and that was never my intent," added Pugh.

Pugh says he will spend the next two years working hard for the city to straighten out its finances. He says  they'll be meeting with a state review team , but says the city can't afford an emergency  manager.

Pugh was a local television news anchor and reporter before he ran for city council.  It was recently announced that Pugh's condo was in foreclosure, but he says that's not why he won't run for re-election.

He admits it hasn't been easy having to make a short sale on his home since he's making on council one third of what he used to make as a local television anchor.
