Doug Karsch: My Realistic Tiger Target
The Tigers will make a trade. There is overwhelming sentiment amongst baseball insiders that Dave Dombrowski will not stand pat. As we take a look at the possible targets, there are the pipedreams (Prince Fielder leading the way) and the retreads (Vladimir Guerrero or Alfonso Soriano). But I'm looking at a guy who very well could be a spare part elsewhere who could be the perfect fit in Detroit.
That guy is John Mayberry Jr. of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Mayberry Jr. is poised to a be a platoon player in leftfield and may not play at all if prospect Dominic Brown pans out. Mayberry Jr. hit. 273 with 49 RBI's as a part time player (267 AB's) in Philly a year ago. Most of his at bats came in the bottom half of the order, so he wasn't doing it hitting directly behind Ryan Howard. Given he is a spare part, put him Detroit's line-up and give him an everyday spot I think you could expect a quality major league return on the investment.
