HUD Pilot Project Looks To Connect Jobs & Low Income Residents

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit is one of five cities in the nation to be selected to take part in HUD's pilot online Section Three Business Registry.

Mayor Dave Bing said he is delighted to be part of the attempt to connect businesses with low-income and public housing residents with HUD funded projects.

"Section Three of the Housing and Urban Development Act is particularly important to the city of Detroit as it promotes employment, training and contracting opportunities to low-income residents.  This business registry will help job seekers identify employment opportunities and will provide greater visibility for Section Three businesses to connect with business opportunities," said Bing.

HUD Midwest Regional Administrator Antonio Riley says the new online registry is a tool that helps HUD promote self-sufficiency.

" ... and encourage local businesses to provide meaningful and sustainable economic opportunities. It is unique in that it moves people from being the recipient of housing assistance to becoming contributors to the restoration and rebuilding of their communities," said Riley.

New Orleans, Miami, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. are the four other cities included in the pilot program.
