Woman's Cell Phone Leads Police To Her Stolen Car

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Police were able to recover a stolen vehicle in Chesterfield Township by using the GPS coordinates of a cell phone that was left inside the car.

A 53-year-old Chesterfield woman called 911 on Saturday around 6 p.m. to report that her vehicle had just been stolen while parked and running outside of a residence on Wand Street.

The woman told police her purse and cell phone were in the vehicle when it was taken. Dispatchers then made contact with the cell service provider, who was able to give real-time GPS coordinates of the victim's phone, and her stolen vehicle, as it traveled north on Gratiot at 27 Mile Road.

Within minutes, the vehicle was stopped and police arrested the driver, 41-year-old Richard Moore of Chesterfield.

Moore was arraigned on charges of unlawfully driving away an automobile and driving with a suspended license. He is currently being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
