Weather Too Warm For Outdoor Hockey Tourney

ST. CLAIR SHORES (AP) - A stretch of warm weather this winter has forced the cancellation of an outdoor hockey tournament planned for a canal off Lake St. Clair.

The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports organizers of the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic on Thursday called off the event, which previously had been pushed back from January to this month. Warm temperatures kept the canal from freezing.

Instead, a hockey-themed "pity party" is planned for Feb. 11. That will include live entertainment, air hockey games and other events.

Organizers say they'll work on planning the hockey tournament for next year.

Organizers had 64 teams signed up and 32 on a waiting list for the 4-on-4 games. Teams that paid to register for the event will get refunds.
