Gov. Snyder To Unveil New Budget Plan

LANSING (WWJ) - Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to present his latest budget proposal for the coming fiscal year before Lansing lawmakers on Thursday, with education as a top priority.

"The proposal will ask for between a 2.8 percent to 3 percent increase in funding in the K-12 budget but it will come with strings attached. Best practices will have to be abducted by the schools in order to get this additional revenue which comes to hefty $323 million additional dollars," said WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick.

According to Skubick, the governor will also increase the rainy day fund of $100, to $150 million, taking part of the state's surplus and putting that money into a fund as a long-term growth and a guard against the rainy day's that Michigan has a history of going through.

Plymouth-Canton Schools Superintendent, Dr. Jeremy Hughes said that in his nearly 25 years in public education, last year's $1 billion cut to school districts was "the most severe" he'd ever seen.

"The way things have been going in the past, I would just be happy to get the same amount of state aid next year that we received last year," Hughes told WWJ. "Just don't cut us anymore."
