Children Injured In Multi-Vehicle Crash

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - An 11-year-old boy was critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash Friday morning in Chesterfield Township.

Police said a mom was driving five children to school when her van collided with a Jeep and a Chevy at the intersection of 26 Mile and Center Line roads.

Chesterfield Township Police Sergeant Brad Kersten said they are still trying to piece together what happened.

"There were witness statements that said there might have been a malfunctioning traffic light. We'll take a look at that," said Kersten, adding that speed may have been a factor but it did not appear alcohol was involved.

"Driver conduct, driver error ... we'll also look at that to see what happened prior to the collision.  It appears somebody ran a red light. Who, actually, or which vehicle did it, at this point we don't know," he said.

State Police said the kids, ages 8-13, were transfered to Children's Hospital in Detroit. Occupants of the other vehicles were being treated at Macomb County hospitals.
