Man, Woman Die In Mobile Home Fire

WESTLAND (WWJ) - An investigation is underway after a deadly mobile home fire in Westland.

Officials say the fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Friday at a trailer in the Westland Meadows mobile home park near Van Born and Merriman roads.

The 58-and 54-year-old residents, whose names have not yet been released, were found dead in separate bedrooms after firefighters put out the flames.

Assistant Fire Chief John Adams said it looks like careless smoking is to blame.

"The point of origin of the fire was in the back. So now you have a tremendous fire load there, the foam and the mattress and the materials with that, and once that goes up, it doesn't matter if it's in a trailer, a single family home, an apartment complex, it can represent a serious hazard for any occupant that's in that room," said Adams.

An investigation is ongoing. No other injuries were reported.
