Snyder Talks Emergency Manager & Eliminating Personal Property Tax At D.E.C.

DETROIT (WWJ) - Governor Rick Snyder was in Detroit Monday addressing the Detroit Economic Club on several topics surrounding budget issues.

WWJ's Pat Sweeting reports that with just a couple of weeks before the review committee deadline for a report to Snyder on whether the city needs an emergency manager, Snyder is not giving any indication of the status of the committee's progress.

"They can ask for a 30 day extension if they need it, but they are doing their work and I appreciate their work, it's not an easy task," said Snyder.

"I have not heard (that the review committee will need extra time) but that's an option that is available to them," he said

The governor lauds Mayor Bing for working diligently in an effort to work with to uniform and non-uniform  employee unions.

Snyder points out that it's not his job to second guess Bing's decisions but act as a supporting resource.

In speaking of other state issues, elimination of the state's personal property tax is still on Governor Rick Snyder's radar. But, he calls on cities and counties to work together in coming up with ways to accomplish that reform; approaches the governor says that will work well for them.

"and, the focus should be on the industrial piece of the personal property tax. ... that's the primary area in terms of causing ... jobs issues and capital issues," said Snyder.

Governor Snyder says he hopes he can get something done this year.
