It was spring training about 20 years ago. My day began like most then: A drive to the Tigers clubhouse at Marchant Stadium in Lakeland for a talk with manager Sparky Anderson before an exhibition game.
The Tigers were on the road this particular day. They were playing the Astros in nearby Kissimmee.
On the street to the ballpark, I stopped at a traffic light. In the car in front of me was Sparky, in full uniform, leaning on the passenger door. The cars next to Sparky on both sides of the three-lane road were doing double takes and pointing at him.
