Jack Morris Delivered When It Mattered

When he was pitching for the Tigers, Jack Morris received a phone call from a friend. The friend knew of a boy dying of cancer and wondered if Morris could sign a ball for him.

Instead of signing a ball, Morris insisted on visiting the boy in his home. The friend drove Morris to the house, and when Morris walked in, the boy was understandably stunned. He sat up, smiled and showed strength he hadn't displayed in weeks. They talked for more than an hour.

There were no TV cameras. No one knew of the meeting except the family, Morris and the friend, who passed along the story to me.
