PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - Emergency crews were called to a popular ice cream parlor in downtown Plymouth after a fire broke out inside the building.

Plymouth City Manager Paul Sincock told WWJ’s Chrystal Knight said police and fire crews responded to Kilwins chocolate and ice cream store on Main Street at Penniman Avenue during the early morning hours Friday.

“The fire was reported shortly before 4 a.m. by a landscape contractor working in the downtown area and the police department responded, as well as approximately 20 firefighters,” said Sincock.

He said the fire was started by a candle left burning in the same building as Kilwins and quickly spread.

“A candle was left, it burned down and eventually caught some books on fire that were left on a shelf, and then caught the curtains on fire and that was when it was noticed. There were flames coming out of the front windows of the second floor of that building,” he said.

Sincock said thanks to quick action from the fire and police departments in the city, damage to the building, which was built in 1898, is minimal. No one was injured.
