Megadeal For Megatron? Lions Meeting With Johnson's Agent

INDIANAPOLIS -- Defensive end Cliff Avril made his aversion to the franchise free agent designation known last week, but the Lions are no closer to a decision on Avril's future in Detroit.

"We have not made a decision on Cliff," said Lions general manager Martin Mayhew. "We're still going to work on getting a long-term deal done.

"Certainly, it's not our desire to franchise Cliff. We don't want to do that. We're hopeful we get something long-term done. I think it's the best thing for him and the best thing for us.

"Franchising him is not a good option for us. The only worse option is playing without him. We don't want to play without him."

The franchise tag would have to be applied to Avril by March 5 and would cost the Lions $10.6 million.
