–Rookie defenseman Brendan Smith honed his game in Grand Rapids (AHL) the past three months and returned to the Wings better prepared to play in the NHL. Smith logged 13:15 and played well defensively in a 5-2 win over Columbus Tuesday. The team is hoping to get Smith into several games before the playoffs, give him more experience and build his confidence in case he’s needed in the postseason. Smith has a bright future with the team. He’s a skilled player who likes to rush the puck up the ice and makes a good first pass.
