Pat Caputo: The Gift Left As Fast As It Arrived For Joel Zumaya

When Joel Zumaya was selected by the Tigers in the 2002 baseball draft, it caused virtually no ripple.

He was picked in the 11th round. The 321st overall pick out of his high school near San Diego.

Zumaya topped out at about 90 mph his senior year. The thought he would become arguably the hardest throwing pitcher of time was unimaginable.

Yet, before Zumaya's first summer of pro ball was complete, there were signs. First it was the high 90s. Then it was scouts re-checking their radar guns to make sure they weren't broken because the kid was hitting triple digits — 100 mph and upward.
