High Wind Warning For Southeast Michigan

DETROIT (WWJ) - Hold on to your hat, because it's a gusty night in Metro Detroit.

The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a high wind warning for the area, in effect through 7 a.m. Saturday.

NWS says southwesterly sustained winds of 35 to 40 mph and westerly wind gusts of 55 to 60 mph will be possible. The strongest winds are expected to occur between 9 p.m Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday. - Check the wind speed radar -

High Wind Watch: Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, Wayne

Strong winds can result in the downing of large limbs, trees and power lines. Bring in unsecured objects from patios and balconies and secure outdoor objects such as lawn furniture or garbage cans that could blow away and cause damage or injury. Power outages are possible.

When driving, keep a safe distance from cars in adjacent lanes as strong gusts could push a car outside its lane of travel. Take extra care in a high-profile vehicle such as a truck, van or SUV.

WWJ-TV Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said it's all part of a spring-like system moving through the Great Lakes area. Madaus said we are also seeing some unseasonably mild temperatures for this time of year.

"In fact, 15 degrees warmer than we should be," he said.

Meantime, more wintry conditions were expected to make travel hazardous in parts of the state.

Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula and parts of the Upper Peninsula are in line for another significant round of winter weather.  8 to 14 inches of snow could fall this evening and Saturday in parts of the northern Lower Peninsula. In parts of the Upper Peninsula, the forecast calls for 4 to 6 inches today -- followed by another 3 to 5 inches of snow on Saturday.
