Should Ann Arbor Ease Up On Medical Pot Shops?
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - While future of Ann Arbor's medical marijuana dispensaries remain up in the air, City Council is set to introduce a resolution asking the city attorney to ease up on the pot shops while the state law makes its way through the courts.
The concerns regarding these shops has entered the public spotlight after the state appeals court ruled in a decision last year that Michigan's medical marijuana law does not permit dispensaries.
City Council member Sabre Brierre drew up the resolution, which she said instructs the city attorney to back off his continued efforts to shutdown the medical marijuana shops.
"The city attorney complains about how much time he's spending on this," Brierre said. "So the board asked me to create a resolution saying, so don't spend any more time on it."
Brierre added that the City Attorney has previously stated that he would listen to directions if given by the City Council. "This is a way for the City Council to give that direction in public," she said.
Ultimately, the Supreme Court could make the ruling over whether dispensaries are allowed under state law.
Council members were expected to vote on the resolution Monday night.
