DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A suburban Detroit official says he was attacked outside the home of the Detroit Red Wings after attending a hockey game.

Dearborn City Councilman Robert Abraham reportedly received four stitches near his eye and suffered other facial cuts and bruises after the Sunday night attack outside Joe Louis Arena.

Abraham said the attacker was upset about the Chicago Blackhawks’ jerseys worn by his son’s friends. The councilman said he tried to calm the man down and ended up on his back.

Abraham’s 22-year-old son is a senior at Chicago’s Loyola University and came home to see the game with two college friends.

Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said officers are seeking witnesses and hoping surveillance video contains clues.

The Red Wings lost the Original Six matchup 2-1.
