Seventy years ago, World War II was already playing havoc with the Detroit Tigers’ lineup when the team began its last Florida spring workouts until the return of peacetime.

The Tigers prepped for the 1943, ’44 and ’45 seasons in southern Indiana. But trying to hit a curve ball in the cold was still better than combat on a distant battlefront.
