FILLMORE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities in southwestern Michigan say a driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed head-on into vehicle carrying two people getting ready to deliver newspapers, killing a 26-year-old man.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department said the crash happened about 2 a.m. Thursday in Fillmore Township, near Holland.
Investigators say the 25-year-old Fennville-area man was heading home from work at the time of the crash and told investigators he fell asleep. The 26-year-old driver of the other vehicle died and a 17-year-old rear passenger in that vehicle was injured. Officers say they were from the Plainwell area.
Names weren’t immediately released. The 25-year-old and 17-year-old were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as non-life threatening.
An investigation is ongoing.
