Authorities Investigate Death Of 6-Year-Old Girl

FLINT (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a 6-year-old girl who was found with multiple wounds on her extremities has died at a Flint-area hospital.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton tells The Flint Journal that the girl died Wednesday night. He said her 31-year-old mother was in custody.

"The multiple wounds were in various stages ... all over her body. Burns, bruises, cuts even open sores and there is a possibility that both arms were broken," said Leyton.

Leyton says it wasn't immediately known what caused the wounds or where the girl might have been injured. He says the girl and her mother have ties to Wayne County.

"According to CPS there was reports of abuse in 2010 and 2011 the occurred in Wayne County and there was some action taken down there at that time," said Leyton.

Leyton says the prosecutor's office filed an emergency order with family court to remove the woman's other child, a 9-year-old girl, from a Flint home.

An autopsy is being done to determine exact cause of death. And Leyton says child abuse charges could come soon.
