Detroit's McCallum Picks Up National Accolades

University of Detroit Mercy sophomore guard Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2011-12 All-District First Team Wednesday. He was also honored with the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight National Player of the Week after leading the Titans to a Horizon League championship and the NCAA tournament, set to begin Friday.

McCallum scored 20+ points in three straight games in the league tournament to propel the third-seeded Titans' offense. He scored 21 in the championship game and was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player as Detroit grabbed its first league title since 1999.

McCallum sits just seven points shy of 1,000 in his young career as he looks to become the 37th Titan to reach that milestone. McCallum leads his team in scoring (15.6 ppg), assists (3.9 apg) and steals (1.5 spg) for the second straight season.
Detroit (22-13)-- the 15 seed in the Midwest Region-- heads into Friday's NCAA Second Round against second-seeded Kansas, who ranks sixth in the national polls.

Joining McCallum on the NABC All-District 12 First Team are nation's leading scorer Reggie Hamilton of Oakland University, Dominique Morrison of Oral Roberts, South Dakota State's Nate Wolters and Alex Young from IUPUI. The second team includes: Ryan Broekhoff and Kevin Van Wijk from Valparaiso, Youngstown State's Kendrick Perry, Alec Brown of Green Bay and Frank Gaines from IPFW.
