Doug Karsch: The Lions Important Offseason

I have often said that this would be the most important Lions off season in a long time. Every off season is hugely important, but this one in particular had challenges we have not seen in decades. The fact that the Lions have players that are actually coveted by others ... and little cap space ... and not having high draft picks - how do the Lions get better?

Some creative work from GM Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand.

Fans should have faith. What's clear is the players have faith in this management team. Matt Stafford has restructured his contract for the second time in two years. Ndamukong Suh restructured his contract, Nate Burleson his contract. Would these players budge if they didn't think the Lions have a competent management team in place?

Calvin's contract extension is the largest given to a non-quarterback in the history of the NFL. And it frees up cap space. Calvin Johnson wants to be in Detroit and signed a deal that helps the organization sign others to further the agenda of winning.

That's the kind of player I want on my team.
