State School Board Extends Mike Flanagan's Contract

LANSING (AP) - The State Board of Education has given Michigan schools chief Mike Flanagan a one-year contract extension.

The board voted Tuesday to extend Flanagan's term as superintendent of public instruction until May 1, 2015. His salary will remain $184,000, unchanged since 2009.

The elected state school board first appointed Flanagan to the job in 2005. He runs the state Department of Education, chairs the state board and advises it, the governor and the Legislature on education matters.

Before becoming state schools superintendent, Flanagan was superintendent of Wayne County's intermediate school district and superintendent of the Farmington-Farmington Hills public schools. He has degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan University.
