Univ. of Mich. Basketball Venue Now Crisler Center
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — It's official: The University of Michigan's basketball facility is now formally known as Crisler Center.
AnnArbor.com reports (http://bit.ly/y5mgyW) the name change became official Thursday with a unanimous decision from the university's governing board.
The facility had been called Crisler Arena. The athletic department began phasing in the name change to Crisler Center with the start of the current basketball season.
University Chief Financial Officer Timothy Slottow told the governing board that because of a $52 million renovation and expansion currently at Crisler, the "arena" name no longer fits. It's now more than a basketball arena.
The facility was built in 1967 and had been called Crisler Arena since 1970.
