Arrest Made In Fire Described As '100% Arson'

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Police have made an arrest following a late night fire at a Detroit apartment building that left dozens homeless and injured several people.

A Detroit firefighter and a young girl were among those suffering smoke inhalation during Tuesday night's blaze at the Chatham Apartments, near Clairmount and the Lodge Freeway.

Department Battalion Chief No. 5 Doug Lyon said someone set bags of trash afire in a fifth floor hallway. Officials described the fire as "100 percent arson."

Hundreds of residents ran from their homes to escape the smoke and flames, while others had to be rescued.

Most residents were allowed back inside around 10:30 p.m. after the fire was put out. All of the injured are expected to recover.
