HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) – In an unexpected move, Highland Park’s Police Chief handed in his gun and badge and called it quits.
WWJ’s Vickie Thomas reports Police Chief Lorenzo Veal, who had held the position in Highland Park for about two years, abruptly resigned from the department Wednesday.
Mayor DeAndre Windom, who found Veal’s resignation letter in his office, said he was “completely shocked.” He said Veal did not give any explanation as to why he was leaving the department, only that his departure was effective immediately.
The Deputy Chief would typically take over the post, but Windom said that person, LaNesha Jones, was recently laid off.
Windom said he had no plans yet for appointing an acting chief.
