Former Dearborn Woman Killed In Apparent Hate Crime

DETROIT (WWJ) - An Iraqi woman who once lived in Dearborn has been killed in an apparent hate crime.

Thirty-two-year-Shaima Alawadi was found brutally beaten and unconscious in her home outside of San Diego Wednesday with a note that read "go back to your country."

She was put on life support and died in the hospital Saturday.

"The family is still in a psychological numbness, I guess ...  they still can't believe that this is actually happening to them,"

Hanif Mohebi is the director of the San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"Our community needs to take any kind of threat seriously and report it, my understanding is that the family recieved some kind of a note, you know, a few weeks before that they kind of dismissed. It was along the lines of 'you terrorists go back home'," said Mohebi.

Alwadi leaves five children and a husband behind.

Police are searching for her killer.
