Fleeing Driver Killed When Car Rear-ends Truck

BERLIN TOWNSHIP (AP) - The Monroe County sheriff's department says a 74-year-old driver fleeing police was killed when he rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Interstate 75 in southeastern Michigan.

Sgt. Brian Angerer says Johnie L. Bentley of Wyandotte died about 9:35 a.m. Tuesday in Berlin Township, about 25 miles south-southwest of Detroit.

In a release, Angerer says Bentley was fleeing police from Wayne County's Brownstown Township at high speed when he hit the truck. The truck's driver was unhurt.

The sergeant says the chase started after Bentley refused a police request to stop his car.

Angerer didn't say why police first sought to stop the car. A message seeking comment was left with the department.
