Man, Dog Make Dramatic Escape From Burning Home

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - Fire officials say a homeowner and his dog narrowly escaped a fire Thursday in Farmington Hills .

Fire crews from all four stations in the city were called to the scene, early in the morning, of a large burning home on Ballantrae Court near  I-696  and Drake.

Lt. Denny Hughes told WWJ Newsradio 950 that flames were through the roof by the time they arrived on the scene, and the homeowner made a dramatic escape.

"He escaped through a second-story window after he was awakened by his dog and smoke alarm, only to find his room fully charged with smoke," Hughes said.

The man threw a mattress out the window, tossed the dog out first and then followed. Both the man and the dog suffered only minor injuries.

Half of the home was destroyed, including top-floor rooms and the garage.

Authorities have not yet determined a cause of the blaze. An investigation is ongoing.
