Bomb Squad Called In Flint After Suspicious Find

FLINT (WWJ/AP) - The Genesee County Sheriff's Department says deputies called in the bomb squad after finding suspicious items during a traffic stop in Flint.

Police say the incident happened during around 8 p.m. Thursday on Fenton Road and Markham Street, after officers observed a man driving a GMC van erratically.

After pulling the man over, deputies found a coffee container with a white substance inside with wires and batteries connected, according to the Flint Journal.

Sheriff Robert Pickell said the 43-year-old man indicated that the materials were for a bomb. He said authorities also found switchboards and aerosol cans.

The coffee container, wiring and batteries were destroyed by the bomb squad. No injuries were reported.

Police were working Friday to determine whether they were dealing with an actual explosive device.

Pickell said the man, who was homeless, was held at the Genesee County Jail. He could face charges or a mental health evaluation.
