Manager Recommended For Muskegon Heights Schools

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A state review team has formally decided that the Muskegon Heights school district is in a financial emergency, recommending the appointment of an emergency manager.

The review team voted Monday to recommend that Gov. Rick Snyder appoint an emergency manager for the western Michigan school district. Snyder has 10 days to act on the recommendation.

The recommendation had been expected. The Muskegon Heights state review process started soon after the district's school board voted in December to seek an emergency manager.

The 1,400-student district has lost a third of its enrollment since 2006. Its growing cumulative general fund deficit is estimated at about $9.4 million.

School districts in Detroit and Highland Park already have emergency managers, along with the cities of Benton Harbor, Ecorse, Flint and Pontiac.

Meantime, Detroit leaders are working with the state to come to an agreement to handle the city's finances. If no deal is reached by the Thursday deadline, Gov. Snyder could appoint an emergency manager for Detroit. (Read the latest on this here).
