Detroit Mayor Dave Bing Back In Hospital

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing is back in the hospital as a precaution.

According to a statement from the Mayor's office, Bing was admitted Wednesday afternoon to Henry Ford Hospital "as a simple precaution" after experiencing some discomfort.

The 68-year-old Bing has been recuperating at home from his March 24 surgery to repair a puncture in his colon.

Kirk Lewis, the mayor's Chief-of-Staff, was named Deputy Mayor while Bing was in the hospital.

According to a statement, the mayor is expected to be out of the office for three weeks, but continues to communicate with his office and is completely updated on city operations.

The Mayor's illness comes at an inopportune time, as city leaders and the state were work to reach a deal to handle Detroit's finances before Thursday's deadline. The city is expected to run out of money within weeks if the state does not intervene. (UPDATE: City Council Approves Detroit Stability Agreement).
