Acting Mayor: "We Expect A Full Recovery"

DETROIT (WWJ) - The acting Detroit mayor insists Dave Bing is still the mayor, despite the fact that he's been diagnosed with a new health problem.

Bing is suffering from pulmonary embolisms in both lungs. A serious condition, says acting mayor Kirk Lewis, but Lewis says he is being treated and will be released from the hospital in a few days.

"It may be serious but it's been treated, we expect him to have a full recovery, we expect him to be back to work by the end of the month," said Lewis.

"Actually he was in a tremendous amount of discomfort ... so he's doing fine, actually I just left him a few hours ago, he gave me several assignments, so I know he's doing alright," added Lewis.

Lewis does not know if the condition is related to the perforated colon Bing suffered last month. He says he's in constant touch with the mayor, who will play a key role in following through with the consent agreement Bing signed Thursday morning.

"Abosolutely, we have the mayor, he will do the appointments and we will make arrangements with the law departments so that is a valid appointment," said Lewis."He is the Mayor, I'm just standing in his shoes."

The appointments are putting two people in charge of that groundbreaking deal signed with the state.
