Wooley's Weekly Winners

By: Ryan Wooley

With so much going on in the world of sports, I think it's only fitting to dedicate a weekly blog into the winners for the week.

My winners will include either a player, team or organization for something I feel is worthy of the nomination. I also encourage everyone whether you agree or disagree to leave a comment below and nominate who you feel should be a part of my weekly winners.

Even with Opening Day taking place this week, the NFL still found a way to make sure they were top of mind as they not only unveiled the new Nike jerseys, but also released the pre-season schedule. Hat's off to the league as well for placing the Detroit Lions on a nationally televised pre-season game against the Ravens, which is the first time since 91-93 that Detroit has had back to back national TV games.

He made the right call to pull Justin Verlander after the 8th inning of Thursday's Opening Day victory over the Boston Red Sox. No manager in their right mind would pitch their Ace over 110 pitches in game one of 162, unless they were going for a no-hitter. Does it suck Verlander didn't get the win? Of course. But Leyland did what he had to do, and in the end, the Tigers still won. No harm no foul.

It takes a lot for a coach in any sport to actually open up and be truthful, and most times all we ever hear is "coach speak" when they're asked pointed questions. Gundy however was very vocal about the rumor that Dwight Howard wanted him fired, and admitted to the Media who he heard the rumor from—which was upper management. I think not only did Gundy save face by being honest; he gained a lot of people's sympathy with what is going on in Orlando and continued to make Dwight Howard look like an idiot. Take a look for yourself.

The Bulldogs have advanced to their first National Championship game after knocking off Union 3-1 and will play Boston College for the title on Saturday April 7th. They're trying to become the first school since Lake Superior State in 1988 to win a National Title in their first trip to the Frozen Four.
