Man Gets 9-Year Sentence In Racetrack DUI

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - A Michigan man who pleaded guilty to aggravated drunken driving that caused the death of a woman when he crashed his truck into a horse she was riding has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Angus Lake of Riverdale, Mich. apologized to the family of his girlfriend, Michelle Eustis, for striking the horse the 25-year-old woman was riding in April 2011 at Balmoral Park Racetrack in Crete.

In sentencing Eustis on Thursday, Will County Judge Richard Schoenstedt said he wanted to send a message the events of that night "were certainly preventable."

Prosecutors say Lake and two women were drinking one night in April 2011 at the racetrack when they left to go horseback riding. Lake later got into his truck to look for the women, resulting in Eustis' death.
