Oakland County To Honor 183 Green Schools

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP -- Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Oakland Schools Superintendent Vickie L. Markavitch will host the 183 Oakland County schools that have attained Michigan Green School status for the 2011-2012 school year.

Each school will be recognized at a ceremony on Tuesday, April 24 at 9 a.m. at Oakland Schools, 2111 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford Township.

Now in its fifth successful year in Oakland County, the Michigan Green Schools Program is open to all public or private, K-12 schools. The program challenges schools to initiate energy savings activities and introduce programs to further environmental education. Three levels of green status are recognized depending on the number of activities undertaken by a school: green, emerald and evergreen.

The Oakland County number of schools being recognized per district is as follows:

Avondale – 1, Berkley – 4, Birmingham – 14, Bloomfield Hills – 9, Brandon – 6, Clarenceville – 1, Clarkston – 4, Clawson – 2, Farmington – 10, Ferndale – 2, Hazel Park – 2, Holly – 2, Huron Valley – 9, Lake Orion – 9, Lamphere – 2, Novi – 4, Oakland Schools technical campuses – 4, Oxford – 3, Pontiac – 2, Private/Other – 26, Rochester – 17, Royal Oak – 8, South Lyon – 6, Southfield – 2, Troy – 14, Walled Lake – 13, Waterford – 6, West Bloomfield – 1.

Thanks to the dedicated effort of the school community, students and their families are learning firsthand the importance of protecting our resources and saving energy. Getting kids involved in learning to be environmentally responsible is an integral part of developing a green and sustainable future.

The Michigan Green Schools program began as a grassroots initiative in Livingston County in 2006. In Oakland County, the county government and Oakland Schools partner to administer the program.
