Man Killed As He Approached Couple In Harper Woods Alley

HARPER WOODS (WWJ) - Is this Harper Woods' first murder of the year, or a case of self-defense?

Police are releasing few details about an early morning shooting in an alley that has left a Detroit man dead.

Chief Jim Burke said a patrol officer witnessed the shooting. He had been following a couple walking in an alley, on Kelly Road at Roscommon, because he noticed a man was following them.

As the officer was getting out of his car to investigate he saw the man being followed shoot the victim.

"The officer did a good job, recognized something was going on ... The very unusual part is that getting out of his car, within a couple feet, the man fired a gun and shot another person," Burke said. "That, unfortunately, gives us a ton of different things that we have to track down."

The victim was taken to St. John's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The shooter was arrested and remained in custody as police investigate.

It wasn't immediately clear if the two men knew each other.

Authorities are looking for tips in the case.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Harper Woods police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
