Police: WSU Student Sexually Assaulted In Campus Parking Lot

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a student at Wayne State University was sexually assaulted in one of the school's parking lots earlier this week.

Wayne State University Campus Police say the 30-year-old was walking to her car parked in WSU Lot 50 -- a large gravel parking lot just south of the school's athletic building -- around 8:45 p.m. Monday when she was attacked.

The woman told police she was hit from behind by an unknown male, who sexually assaulted her as she struggled with him. The suspect fled on foot and the woman got into her car and drove home, where she notified local police who, in turn, notified WSU police.

The woman wasn't able to give a description of the attacker, only saying he was about 5'7" and was wearing dark clothing.

WSU police are warning students and staff members, as well as area residents, to be aware of their surroundings and trust their instincts.

Police urge students, staff and faculty to use the WSUPD SafeWalk program if they ever feel apprehensive about walking anywhere in the campus area. All you have to do is call WSUPD at 313-577-2222 and request a SafeWalk. Then, a WSUPD officer will be dispatched to your location and watch you walk to your destination.
