Reporting Mike Campbell
DETROIT (WWJ) – After being sidelined for more than a month with health problems, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing is ready to step back into Detroit’s starting lineup.
Monday marked the mayor’s first day back at work since late March when he had emergency surgery for a perforated intestine and, about a week later, he was hospitalized with blood clots in his lungs.
Bing appeared thin, but when WWJ Newsradio 950 reporter Mike Campbell yelled from behind the reporters’ barrier to ask how he was feeling, the mayor responded, “Gettin’ better. Gettin’ better.” With that, and a wave to reporters, Bing made his way inside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building just before 8 a.m.
Talking to WWJ at a charity event over the weekend, the mayor’s wife Yvette Bing said she said he’s doing fine and she supports his decision to return to work.
“You know, we’re going to take it one day at a time but I think he’s ready. He may not be full-force, you know, the first day or so. But he’s ready to go back,” she said.
The mayor is expected to work just part of the day on Monday.
