Organ Donor Sign-Up Comes To Facebook

LANSING (WWJ) - Facebook wants to help you share your organs.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced users are going to be able to enroll as organ donors via links on the popular social networking site.

Richard Pietroski, with Gift of Life Michigan, likes the idea.

"It's a great way for Facebook to use its portal  ...to benefit society, to help get people off the transplant wait list," Pietroski said.

Pietroski explained how Facebook registration will work.

"People would go to a single website, which actually takes everybody, regardless of what state they're in, to that state's particular donor registration link," he said. "It would be, as individuals register ... It would be what we call first-person authorization, and it would be legally binding."

Facebook users who are already organ donors can add that information to their profile page.

Pietroski said the goal is to increase the number of organ donors by 20 million this year.  That would be on top the current 100,000  million people who have already registered to become organ donors.
