Felony Charges In High School Gun Bust

DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A 19-year-old Dearborn Heights student has been charged after he allegedly carried a loaded handgun on school property.

Police said Robert Lee-Curtis Perkins of Inkster showed off the gun, stuffed into the waistband of his pants, to another student at Crestwood High School, who told a teacher about it.  The school contacted police who arrested Perkins a short time later at the local library.

Police said the weapon, a 0.38-caliber revolver, was loaded.

Perkins is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon in a weapon free school zone, and felony firearm. He has been suspended from school pending an expulsion hearing.

Perkins was arraigned in Dearborn Heights's 20th District Court Tuesday afternoon.. The judge set bond at $130,000 and scheduled a preliminary exam for May 16.

Crestwood High School was on lockdown for a short time following the incident. School officials said, in a statement, that Perkins did not threaten anyone.
