Alleged Drunk Driver Runs Down Man Sitting In Road

LENOX TWP. (WWJ) - Police are investigating the strange circumstances surrounding a fatal hit-and-run accident early Thursday morning in Macomb County.

Officials say 30-year old Matthew Thompson was sitting on County Line Road near 26 Mile in Lenox Township when he was hit by a car and killed at around 2:30 a.m.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the driver ended up in a ditch, then got out of his vehicle and took off running. He was caught a short time later and arrested.

Sheriff Wickersham said it's believed the driver was drunk.

Charges could be filed later Thursday.

It's still unclear why Thompson was sitting in the road.  The investigation continues.

The driver's name has not been released.
