Bill Before House Committee Looks To Make College More Accessible To Returning Vets

DETROIT (WWJ) - A bill making its way through the legislature in Lansing looks to help veterans returning from service find easier access to a higher education.

A proposal before the state House Education Committee would require universities and community colleges to offer in-state or local tuition to any active duty or U.S. military veteran.

State Representative Holly Hughes of Montague, is a backer of the new bill.

"We have a lot of suicide with our veterans, we have a small window when they come back - kind of like your kids, if you don't latch on to that window when they are trying to do re-entry, you lose that window when they are trying to reconnect with their family, get a job and go to school," said Hughes.

Some within the community college ranks have already come out against the proposed measure -- saying it would take local control away from college boards.
