Terry Foster With Sam Washington Jr. On Detroit Hoops

By: Terry Foster

Sam Washington Jr. is the unofficial king of basketball in Detroit. He took over St. Cecelia two years ago and runs the basketball leagues there. His father Sam Washington was the founder of the Saint and now the son wants to take over the family legacy.

Washington talked to me on Monday about the state of Detroit basketball and other issues. Hoops are a shell of what it used to be. The talent is down and much of it has moved out or state. Washington also blames AAU for the demise. Washington remembers when Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Dave Bing and Bob Lanier used to come to the Saint for a game.

The summer league has already begun. You can go to the Saint to watch high school and college players play every evening beginning at 4 p.m. Games normally last all night.

Washington also gave his prediction on the NBA Finals and answered the question of whether LeBron James must win an NBA title or forever ruin his legacy in hoops.
You can also help St. Cecilia stay open by golfing in its 10th annual golf tournament. Call 313-933-6288 for more information.
