Elderly Women Robbed At Gunpoint Inside Detroit Home

DETROIT (WWJ) - An elderly woman and her 96-year-old mother were robbed at gunpoint inside their home on Detroit's west side Thursday morning.

WWJ's Vickie Thomas reports the incident happened at a home on Piedmont Street off Schoolcraft, near I-96. The 66-year-old homeowner said she was abruptly awoken around 3 a.m.

"I woke up to a man with a shotgun in my face and a flashlight, telling me not to move and asking me where the keys are," she said.

Two men had kicked in the door to her home and were now trying to find anything of value, and they wanted the woman's safe.

"I was so upset I couldn't even think of the combination at first and I finally got the combination out and he was putting the gun closer in my face and I seen the other man go out the bedroom," she said.

The men then took off with the safe, containing about $8,000 -- money the women had recently received from an insurance settlement.

The woman and her mother, who slept through the entire ordeal, were not hurt.

"My house was broken into exactly the same way as my neighbor's house. They did the same exact thing, they didn't bother anything but the safe," she said.

Her neighbor, Raymond Butler, said thieves took two safes from his home.

"When I heard this happened, I had a flashback, you know, waking up to a gun in your face. It ain't no joke," he said.

Police are now searching for the suspects.
