Phoenix Theatres To Bring Plays, Operas, Ballets, Concerts To Movie Auditoriums

FARMINGTON -- Phoenix Theatres is bringing a world of culture to Southeast Michigan.

With new digital sound and HD picture capacity, Phoenix Theatres in Livonia and Monroe are now able to use satellite technology to offer professional stage plays, operas, ballets, concerts and other cultural performances from multiple countries to local patrons at a low general admission price of just $15, or $10 for children and students.

"At Phoenix Theatres we are all about providing a variety of top-quality digital entertainment for our customers," said Cory Jacobson, owner of Phoenix Theatres. "While most of our customers come to us for entertaining movies coming out of Hollywood, we now have the capability of presenting new cultural events like opera, stage plays and ballets. Unfortunately, seeing such classical performances would include an airline ticket to destinations like Europe or New York City. Those are wonderful opportunities but not very feasible for most people. Our new Ensemble Specialty Program offers us the opportunity to bring such tremendous events to our local communities, and we can show it in such high-quality digital imaging and sound that it's as close as possible to being there live."

The premier schedule begins May 31 with the Broadway stage play Company starring Neal Patrick Harris (as Bobby) and John Cryer of "Two and a Half Men." The Company plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. It's a concept musical composed of short vignettes linked by a celebration of Bobby's 35th birthday. The performance repeats June 2.

On June 21, Phoenix's Ensemble will feature the outdoor opera Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi. The open-air production of his masterpiece, staged at St. Margarethen in Austria, takes place amidst the intoxicating scenery of a rustically romantic Roman quarry.  Nabucco tells the story of Nebuchadnezzar, ancient king of Babylon, who went mad after proclaiming himself God. It is one of the most popular works in the history of opera. The performance airs again on June 24.

Future performances featured on Ensemble include: W.A. Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte "hippie-musical" opera on July 19 and 21; W.A. Mozart's The Great Mass ballet, July 26 and 28; Giuseppe Verdi's Aida opera August 16 and 18; and Giuseppe Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera opera, Sept. 20 and 22.

Visitors to either www.phoenixmovies.net or www.movietickets.com can purchase tickets weeks in advance, so they can secure tickets for the latest blockbuster hits or Ensemble without waiting in line.

Phoenix Theatres opened its first theatre in 2001 and currently operates 10 screens at Laurel Park Place in Livonia and eight screens at the Mall of Monroe in Monroe. For more information, visit www.phoenixmovies.net.
