Broken Glass Cited In 8-Acre Ypsilanti Grass Fire
YPSILANTI (WWJ/AP) - A broken piece of glass is getting the blame for a fire that consumed eight acres of grassland in Washtenaw County.
Ypsilanti Township fire Lt. Keith Harr said his crews got a call around 2 p.m. Wednesday of a fire burning near Ford Motor Co.'s Rawsonville plant. It's about 25 miles west-southwest of Detroit.
Harr told AnnArbor.com that the cause of the blaze turned out to be "magnification by busted glass." He said the site used to be a recreation area for plant workers and the grass had grown calf high.
A special grass-fire truck, which can spray water while mobile, and a crew from nearby Augusta Township responded. The grass truck joined the two Ypsilanti Township trucks and six firefighters.
Harr said winds aided the spread, and it took about two hours to contain the blaze.
No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.
