Dive Team Finds Body Of Harsens Island Swimmer

SAINT CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - Divers have recovered the body of a 21-year-old Detroit man who was swimming near Harsens Island in Lake St. Clair.

Officials say Jose Salazar had jumped from the Mayberry bridge into water that is eight to ten feet deep -- but never resurfaced.

According to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon, the dive team found Salazar around 5:40 p.m. in water that was about 15 feet deep.

Police say Salazar, his fiancé and three children were all swimming around the bridge shortly before 11:30 a.m. Friday. His fiancé called 911 after Salazar jumped off the bridge and didn't resurface.

Clay Township Police responded, along with the Sheriff's Office Marine Division and Dive Team. They were assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Border Patrol, South water Rescue and fire departments from Clay Township, Harsens Island, Algonac and Ira Township.
